Hailing from Lisbon, this self-taught painter and draftsman can be situated within the first Portuguese modernist generation among other important figures such as Almada Negreiros. Born in 1894, he started his artistic career by joining the Salão dos Humoristas (The Humorist Salon) in 1913. The work of his youth consisted mostly of caricature, vignettes, headings and illustrations for publications of the time. It was the graphic and chromatic richness of this early work, allied with an expressive elegance, which earned him critical and public recognition at the time.
